Gambling Disorder in the Age of Mobile Sports Betting
Mobile sports betting has exploded in recent years. As of December 2025, 31 states, plus Washington, D.C., allow for some form of online sports betting. Public health researchers are reporting different outcome data, such as seeking help for gambling addiction, varying by state gambling legislation. According to Nora Volkow, Director at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), "Mobile access has transformed the temporal, spatial, and psychological dynamics of gambling, compressing the cycle of urge, opportunity, and action into seconds and thereby amplifying risk for rapid escalation and in some instances catastrophic outcomes.” As with other forms of addiction, prevention will be an important factor in protecting those most at risk from problematic psychological, social, and financial consequences.

FOMO Is About the Who, Not the What, Research Finds
Fear of missing out, also known as FOMO, refers to anxiety a person experiences when missing out on social activities. New research suggests that FOMO is initiated by worries about missing bonding opportunities with a valued group, rather than missing an enjoyable experience. Research participants worried that missing out would negatively affect their connection and future belonging with the group. The researchers suggest their findings underscore the importance of human bonding in an era of increasing reports of isolation.

ADHD Drugs Don’t Work the Way We Thought
New research out of the University of Washington suggests that stimulant medications, once thought to work by activating brain regions associated with attention, actually work by stimulating brain systems involved in wakefulness. Improvement in attention seems to be a secondary effect of a child being more alert and finding a task more rewarding.
